I love using AE for compositing though. I pretty much use it for all my compositing needs these days. It's so incredibly powerful. Really is a fantastic piece of software.
Maya is great, I would love to learn it, but unfortunately, on my current degree course we're taught Cinema 4D. Which although is also a fantastic program, it isn't quite as advanced as Maya. Perhaps once my course is finished, I'll jump into learning Maya. Also there are more job opportunities out there if you know how to use Maya, which is what I'm really looking for most these days. Hence one of the reasons I started to learn Real Flow, because there is just so much money involved if you know how to use specialist software like that.
No I can generally do all of the most basic things that i'd ever do in a program for videos in AE. If I just need to add transitions and titles on a short video, i'll use Camtasia, otherwise it saves me much time just doing it all in AE anyways. The rendering process takes up time in whatever program you use.
Maya was overwhelming at first, but that's a feeling that i'm used to so it didn't stop me. I'm still only doing the basics, but the fundamentals are a start until i'm ready to get into more advanced functions.

I didn't mean the rendering time, I meant generally using AE for video editing is a more complex & fidgety than software which is purely dedicated to it, like FCP & SV.

I don't find it difficult at all. I find the editing very similar to animations in Photoshop really. The keyframes arrangement is almost identical, except there's more functionality in the way you can use the keyframes for effects in AE. Even for the simplest things I still use AE because i'm familiar with it. It's not complex at all really. You add in an effect and add 2 keyframes for a transition of the effect.

It's not difficult. It's just annoying and fiddly in comparison to say Final Cut & Sony Vegas. That's not to say it's bad for video editing, I'm just comparing it. I know where you're coming from, I also find it easy, but it's better to have a program which is 100% dedicated to a certain task. I can do 3D animation in Photoshop really easy, but obviously I'd choose to do it in Cinema 4D instead, because it's dedicated to 3D animation.. Get what I mean?

Final Cut Pro i have heard alot of good things about it.Im old school i still use pinnacle 9 studios.Whats the best editing software for windows these days?
