So the other day, I was cleaning my room and I found my old Fitbit at the back of a drawer. You know, one of those early models? It reminded me of the hype when these things first hit the market. It seemed like everyone and their dog had one strapped to their wrist, or was planning on getting one. And in theory, yeah, it was kinda cool - this sleek lil’ device tracking our every step, turning exercise into a game, helping to motivate us etc.

But if I’m being honest? I was more excited about the shiny new gadget than its supposed health benefits. The novelty wore off after a few months. I stopped wearing it when the battery died one time and I just… never got round to charging it again.

It got me thinking though, what about the rest of y’all? Anyone else dig out their old wearables during a quarantine clear out? Do you use them regularly? Or has it gone the way of the VCR and gathering dust somewhere?

And what about new wearables hitting the market? Are they worth the hype or just another tech fad? It really seems to me that these companies are just pushing out more and more gadgets just because they can, not because we actually need them. Like those smart glasses - they look cool, but are they practical? Or just a fancy toy?

I’d love to hear your thoughts, experiences or, heck, even if 🤔

Ha! Yeah, I get what you’re saying. I think a lot of us get caught up in the hype of new tech gear. I’ve got a drawer full of old gadgets myself, somewhere between my Game Boy and a Zune, if you remember what those are. 😅

I still use my smartwatch though. I find it helpful for keeping track of emails and calls when I’m working. Won’t deny that there are a ton of wearables that end up gathering dust on a shelf though.

Those smart glasses you mentioned, they do look pretty flashy, but I’m waiting to see if they really catch on before diving in head first. The tech world always loves the latest and greatest, doesn’t it? 🤔 But I reckon it all comes down to individual needs and how much use we can really get out of these gadgets. Less about need, more about want most times, IMO.
