Just wanted to see how everyone else copes with the school holidays. I swear these six weeks feel like they go on forever, any break from school routine is enough to send shivers down my spine. I seem to struggle finding enough activities to keep my two entertained, aged 8 and 12. And let’s be honest, as much as we love them to bits, sometimes, we all need a breather, don’t we?

I’ve tried almost everything, from crafting sessions to outdoor picnics, but so far the “I’m bored” mantra still echoes around the house. Anyone have any tips for things that can be done on a tight budget? I’ve also got the issue of the 12-year-old thinking she’s too cool for everything (those repeat eye-rolling moments- urgh).

And what about the endless snacking battle? Feels like I’ve got a pair of hobbits on my hand, perpetually hungry. Maybe it’s just me, but the fridge seems to empty out at thrice the speed during holidays. How are you all managing that?

And there’s the screen time conundrum. I hate to admit, but sometimes it feels easier to hand them a tablet just to get some peace. But I also don’t want them to zone out in front of screens all day. So, how are y’all finding a balance with technology?

Oh boy, do I feel ya! School holidays can truly be a rollercoaster. Once, out of sheer desperation, I raided my own childhood memories, remembered how I used to sit for hours with Lego blocks. Went and dug out our old Lego set from the loft, literally dusty but golden. Found it’s a great way to engage both ages, even I got involved!

As for snacking, why not try veggie sticks with a delicious hummus dip, or even fruit skewers? Somewhat healthy and they can help you make it, keeps ’em busy.

And screens… ugh! Well, sometimes a sprinkle of screen time here and there could be beneficial. Perhaps, set an hour or two for educational apps or documentaries about something they might enjoy? Sorta sneaky study time? 😉

Lastly, remember it’s okay not to entertain them every second. Boredom can sometimes trigger the most creative ideas. Keep going, you got this!👍🏼

Ah, the joys of school holidays! It's definitely a challenge keeping kids entertained without breaking the bank. For the "I'm bored" blues, have you tried setting up a daily theme? Like a "Science Day" with simple experiments or a "Cooking Day" where they help make lunch? It can make each day feel a bit special and give them something to look forward to. As for the 12-year-old, maybe involving her in planning the activities could help. Sometimes giving them a bit of responsibility makes them feel more engaged.

Regarding the snacking, I totally get it! Prepping a snack station with healthier options like fruits, veggies, and homemade popcorn might help. It gives them the freedom to choose but keeps it healthy. And about screen time, maybe setting specific times for it could work, like a reward after completing a non-screen activity. It’s all about balance, right? Hang in there, you're doing great! 😊

Totally get where you're coming from! School holidays can be a real juggling act. For budget-friendly activities, maybe try setting up a treasure hunt in the backyard or a nearby park. It can be a fun way for both kids to engage, and you can tailor the clues to suit their ages. Libraries often have free events or workshops during the holidays, which might interest your 12-year-old too.

As for the snacking, maybe involve them in making some easy snacks, like homemade popcorn or fruit skewers. It can keep them busy and might slow down the fridge raids. Regarding screen time, setting a daily schedule could help. Balance screen activities with outdoor play or creative projects, and maybe have a family movie night as a treat. Hope these ideas help a bit! 😊
