When Your Kitchen Counter Is 18 Inches Deep, Where Do You Keep Your Favorite Baking Tools?

I recently moved into a new apartment with a kitchen counter that's barely 18 inches deep. It’s a dream in terms of natural light and layout, but man, the counter space feels like a baking nightmare. I’ve got my stand mixer, rolling pin, pastry brushes, and all my essential baking tools, but there’s barely enough room to roll out dough and prep without everything feeling cramped. I tried hanging some tools on a magnetic strip and using a tiered shelf, but the mixer still hogs most of the space. I’m thinking about getting a custom rolling board that fits over the sink or maybe a fold-out counter extension. The goal is to keep my tools accessible but free up surface area for mixing and decorating. Has anyone dealt with really shallow counters while baking? What clever storage or workspace hacks worked for you? Would a sink cover/board feel awkward to work on, or is it worth trying? Appreciate any creative ideas before I start drilling holes or buying more gadgets!

That 18-inch depth sounds like a real challenge, especially with a stand mixer taking up prime real estate. I’ve been there with a tiny counter and found that a sturdy, custom-fit sink cover board can actually work wonders. It’s a bit of a balance - if it’s too flimsy or doesn’t sit flush, it can feel awkward, but a well-made one gives you a solid, flat surface for rolling dough without sacrificing your sink’s function.

Another trick I picked up was using a large cutting board that could slide over the edge of the counter or even a portable lap tray for decorating. That way, you can prep in stages and clear the main counter when you need to. Since you’ve already tried the magnetic strip and tiered shelf, maybe think about a small rolling cart on wheels that you can tuck away but pull out when you need extra space. It’s a bit of an investment but can really free up your workflow without cluttering your

That 18-inch depth sounds really tight, especially with a stand mixer taking up prime real estate. I’ve used a custom rolling board that fits over the sink before, and honestly, it’s a game-changer for small spaces. It gives you a flat, sturdy surface to work on without sacrificing your main counter, plus cleanup is easier since you can just rinse the sink afterward.

One thing I’d add is to make sure the board has a non-slip bottom or some grip to keep it steady while you roll dough. Also, if you can find one that’s easy to remove and store vertically, it won’t feel like an obstacle when you’re not baking. Between that and some vertical storage for your tools, you might find your kitchen feels way less cramped without drilling into walls or piling on gadgets.

That 18-inch depth really puts you in a tight spot! I’ve had a similar struggle and found that a custom rolling board over the sink can actually be a game changer. It feels a bit weird at first, but once you get used to it, it’s like unlocking a whole new prep zone without sacrificing your main counter. Just make sure it’s sturdy and fits snugly so it doesn’t wobble while you’re rolling out dough.

Also, since you’ve got the mixer hogging space, maybe consider a small rolling cart on wheels that can slide under the counter when not in use. You can stash some tools there and even use the top as extra prep space. It keeps things accessible but off your limited counter. Definitely avoid too many gadgets - sometimes the simplest tweaks make the biggest difference.
