I've got a mid-drive electric bike with a Bosch Performance Line motor, and everything was smooth until recently. Now, whenever I hit a steep hill and push the motor hard, there's this unusual buzzing sound coming from the motor area. It's not a grinding or scraping noise, more like a high-pitched vibration, and it stops as soon as I ease off the throttle or get to flatter ground. I’ve checked the chainring and pedals for any looseness, cleaned and lubricated the chain, and even updated the motor firmware through the Bosch app, but the noise persists. I'm worried it might be a sign of internal wear or some kind of bearing issue, but I haven’t seen any leaks or obvious damage. Has anyone experienced a similar buzzing under load on hills? Could it be something as simple as a loose cover or a misaligned sensor? Also, how urgent is it to get this checked out before it potentially causes bigger damage to the motor?

That high-pitched buzzing under load definitely sounds like it could be a bearing or internal motor issue, especially since it only happens when the motor is working hard uphill. Bosch motors are usually pretty solid, but once bearings start to wear, they can make those kinds of noises before any visible damage shows up. Since you’ve already updated the firmware and checked the chainring and pedals, I’d lean towards getting it inspected sooner rather than later to avoid a more expensive repair down the road.

One thing I’ve seen on similar Bosch setups is that sometimes the motor cover or sensor ring can shift slightly, causing weird noises under torque. If you’re comfortable opening it up, a quick look for any loose parts or misalignment might help, but if not, a Bosch-certified shop should be able to diagnose it quickly. Better safe than sorry with these motors!

Sounds like the motor’s trying to tell you something when it’s under strain. Bosch motors are usually pretty solid, but that high-pitched buzz could be a sign of a worn bearing or maybe a slight misalignment inside the motor casing. Since you’ve ruled out chain and pedals, I’d lean toward something internal. If it’s not causing any performance drops or overheating yet, you might be okay to ride gently, but I wouldn’t push it hard or ignore it for too long. Internal damage can escalate quickly and get pricey to fix. If you have access to a Bosch service center, it’s worth having them open it up and give it a look before it turns into a bigger headache. Meanwhile, keep an eye on any changes in noise or ride feel.
