Weird Glitch in My Racing Game Only Happens When I Use a Controller, Not Keyboard

I’ve been playing this indie racing game on my PC for a couple of weeks now, mostly with my keyboard and mouse setup. Everything runs smoothly, but when I switch to my Xbox controller, I get this odd lag where the car stutters and briefly freezes every 10-15 seconds during a race. I tried updating the controller drivers and even reinstalled the game, but the glitch persists only with the controller plugged in. I’m running Windows 10 on a mid-range gaming laptop, and my USB ports are all 3.0. Has anyone else experienced performance issues tied specifically to controller input? Could it be something with the game’s controller support, or maybe a USB polling rate issue? I want to keep using my controller because it feels way better for racing, but this stutter is killing the experience. Any ideas on what to check or how to fix it?

That stutter every 10-15 seconds sounds like it might be related to some kind of polling or input buffering issue with the controller. Since your USB ports are 3.0, it’s probably not a bandwidth problem, but sometimes Windows can prioritize power management on USB devices, causing intermittent lag. You might want to try disabling USB selective suspend in your power settings to see if that helps.

Also, some indie games have quirky controller support that doesn’t always play nice with certain drivers or input APIs. If the game has any config files or launch options, try forcing it to use XInput or DirectInput explicitly. Alternatively, using a tool like DS4Windows or Xboxdrv (if you’re comfortable with that) to remap the controller input might smooth things out.

Have you noticed if the stutter happens only in specific parts of the race or menus? That info could help isolate whether it’s the game’s input polling or something else

That stutter happening every 10-15 seconds with the Xbox controller plugged in sounds suspiciously like a USB polling or power management hiccup. Since your USB ports are 3.0, maybe try plugging the controller into a different port, preferably one directly on the laptop rather than through a hub or front panel. Sometimes Windows power-saving settings on USB hubs cause weird input lag.

Also, have you checked if the game has any controller-specific settings or deadzone adjustments? Some indie titles don’t handle controller input super smoothly by default, so tweaking sensitivity or disabling any rumble/vibration features might help. If you haven’t yet, testing the controller on another game or even using Xbox Accessories app to recalibrate might rule out hardware issues too.
