Our dog’s jealousy over baby’s toys is getting out of hand

We recently welcomed a 9-month-old into our home, and while the baby is loving all the colorful toys, our golden retriever has started acting super possessive and even growls when the baby reaches for certain things. We've tried keeping the dog's toys separate and giving extra attention and treats, but it seems like he’s still stressed and sometimes even snatches toys away from the baby’s play area. It’s worrying because we want both to bond safely, but the tension is getting pretty high. I’m trying to figure out how to help our dog feel included without letting him take over the baby’s space or toys. Has anyone dealt with this kind of jealousy from their pets? What strategies helped you ease the tension and create a peaceful playtime for everyone? Also, how do you keep the baby safe when the dog gets a bit too protective or territorial?

That growling and snatching behavior sounds really stressful for everyone involved. Our dog got pretty territorial when our toddler started crawling around with new toys, and what helped was setting very clear boundaries with baby-safe gates and designated “dog-only” zones. It gave our pup a safe space to retreat to without feeling like he was losing his stuff or status.

Also, we made sure to supervise all interactions closely and redirected any possessive behavior immediately with calm commands and treats - but only when he was calm, never rewarding the growling itself. It’s a slow process, but consistency helped him understand the baby’s toys aren’t his to guard. Maybe pairing the baby’s playtime with extra walks or play sessions for your retriever could help burn off some of that tension too.

Keeping the baby safe is priority, so if the dog’s behavior feels unpredictable, don’t hesitate to create physical space and consult a trainer who specializes in dog-child dynamics. It’s

That growling sounds really stressful for everyone, especially with a little one around. When my dog got territorial over toys after our baby arrived, what helped was setting very clear boundaries with baby-safe gates and supervised play zones. It gave the dog a safe space that was just his, away from the baby’s stuff, and slowly he relaxed knowing he wasn’t losing his “territory.”

Also, I found redirecting his attention with a special high-value treat or a new interactive toy right before baby playtime helped him associate the baby’s presence with good things, not competition. It’s a slow process, but consistency was key. And definitely keep close watch during any interactions - even a calm dog can get overwhelmed and react unpredictably.

Would love to hear if anyone else tried something similar or found ways to help their dog feel included without the growling tension!
