My hedgehog hisses and curls up tightly every time I try to pet her paws

I adopted a hedgehog about two months ago, and she’s been mostly comfortable with me handling her, especially when I scoop her up gently from her hideout. However, whenever I try to pet or clean her paws, she instantly hisses and curls up into a tight ball, making it impossible to check or trim her nails. I’ve tried approaching her paws slowly and offering treats beforehand, but she still reacts the same way. I want to make paw handling less stressful for her because her nails are getting a bit long, and I don’t want to cause her discomfort or accidentally hurt her. Has anyone had success with getting a hedgehog used to paw touching? What kind of tricks or routines helped your little spiky friend relax during nail care?

It sounds like your hedgehog really trusts you when you scoop her up, which is a great start! Paw handling can definitely be tricky since those little feet are super sensitive. What helped my hedgehog was incorporating paw touches into playtime rather than just during nail care. I’d gently tap or stroke her paws while she was relaxed and distracted, sometimes even while she was nibbling on a treat, so she didn’t associate paw touching only with the stressful nail trimming.

Also, try doing short, very gentle sessions frequently instead of one long one. Over time, she might stop hissing and curling up because it becomes a normal, low-stress interaction. Maybe after a few days of just touching and rewarding, you could try a quick check, then stop and give her a break before trying again. It’s all about building that positive connection little by little.

It’s great that she’s comfortable being scooped up but those paws seem to be her no-go zone! When I had a hedgehog, I found that turning paw handling into a super short, positive game helped. I’d gently touch one paw and immediately give a tiny treat, then stop. Repeating this over several days made her less defensive because she started associating paw touches with good stuff, not scary stuff.

Also, try doing it when she’s a bit sleepy or relaxed after a meal - hedgehogs tend to be less reactive then. It’s all about patience and small steps. Maybe even wrapping her loosely in a soft cloth can help keep her calm while you get those nails trimmed. It’s definitely a slow process, but she’ll get there!
