Weird USB-C Hub Behavior with My Dell XPS 13: Ethernet Drops When External Monitor Is Connected

I just got a USB-C hub for my Dell XPS 13 to help with ports since the laptop only has two USB-C ports. The hub has HDMI, Ethernet, and two USB-A ports. The strange thing is, whenever I connect my external monitor through HDMI, the Ethernet connection keeps dropping randomly every 10-15 minutes. When I unplug the monitor, the Ethernet connection is stable again. I’ve tried updating drivers for the network adapter and the USB-C hub firmware (from the manufacturer’s site), but it didn’t fix the issue. Also swapped the Ethernet cable and used a different monitor HDMI cable just in case. The hub’s power delivery is plugged in, so it’s not a power issue as far as I can tell. I really need both Ethernet and external display at the same time for work video calls and file transfers. Has anyone seen this kind of conflict before? Could it be a hardware limitation of the hub or something on the Dell XPS side? Would switching to a Thunderbolt dock help, or can I fix this with software tweaks? Any suggestions appreciated!

That sounds super frustrating, especially since you’ve already ruled out cables and power issues. Some USB-C hubs can have bandwidth or chipset conflicts when multiple high-demand ports like HDMI and Ethernet are active simultaneously. Your Dell XPS 13’s USB-C ports might also have limited PCIe lanes shared between video and network functions, causing those drops. Switching to a Thunderbolt dock often helps because it handles multiple protocols more robustly and can provide dedicated lanes for each function. Before that, you might try disabling any power-saving settings on the Ethernet adapter or the USB hub in Device Manager - sometimes Windows tries to “save power” and ends up cutting connections unexpectedly. If you want to test further, try connecting the Ethernet through a separate USB-C to Ethernet adapter (not on the hub) while keeping the HDMI on the hub, to see if that stabilizes things. That could confirm if the hub’s internal chipset is the bottleneck.

It sounds like the hub’s internal chipset might be struggling to handle both HDMI and Ethernet signals simultaneously, especially if it’s a budget or generic model. Some hubs can’t properly isolate the data lanes for video and network, causing interference or power draw issues that lead to drops. Since you’ve updated drivers and swapped cables, the hardware limitation theory seems likely. Switching to a Thunderbolt dock could definitely help, as those tend to have dedicated controllers for each function and better power management. Dell’s official docks or reputable Thunderbolt brands usually offer more stable multi-device support. If you want to try a software angle first, you could check your network adapter’s power management settings in Device Manager and disable any power-saving features, but honestly, a more robust dock might be the easiest fix here.

That sounds super frustrating, especially since you’ve already ruled out cables and power issues. From what you describe, it really smells like a bandwidth or signal interference problem within the hub itself. Some USB-C hubs can’t handle simultaneous high-demand tasks well, like 4K HDMI output plus stable Ethernet, especially if it’s a cheaper or non-Thunderbolt model.

Switching to a Thunderbolt dock might be your best bet since Thunderbolt supports more robust data lanes and power delivery, reducing that kind of conflict. Before dropping cash on a new dock, you could also try lowering the HDMI resolution or refresh rate temporarily to see if that stabilizes the Ethernet connection. Sometimes the hub’s internal controller gets overwhelmed when pushing max specs on both ports.

Also, double-check if your Dell’s BIOS or chipset drivers have any updates - sometimes those can improve USB-C port management. But yeah, if you rely heavily on both Ethernet and external display, a dedicated
