I’ve been loving this storytelling podcast about forgotten historical events, but recently, whenever I listen on my Bluetooth earbuds during my commute, the audio sounds oddly muffled and distant. It’s weird because the same episode played through my phone’s speakers or wired headphones sounds crystal clear. I tried resetting the earbuds and even updating the podcast app, but no luck. I’m guessing it might be some kind of compression or codec issue specific to the wireless connection, but I’m not sure. The earbuds are a pretty popular brand, so I’m surprised it’s only happening with this particular podcast and not others. Has anyone else experienced this kind of selective audio drop in quality on Bluetooth devices? Should I try switching apps or messing with audio settings like equalizers? Or could it be something about how the podcast files are encoded? Would love to hear if you’ve found any fixes or if it’s just a Bluetooth quirk I have to live with.

That muffled Bluetooth sound on just one podcast definitely sounds like an encoding or bitrate mismatch issue. Some podcasts use variable bitrate or different audio formats that might not play nicely with certain Bluetooth codecs. Since you mentioned other podcasts sound fine, it’s probably not your earbuds or app in general.

One quick test: try downloading the episode and playing it offline instead of streaming. Sometimes streaming apps apply extra compression or switch codecs on the fly, which can mess with quality over Bluetooth. Also, toggling your phone’s Bluetooth codec settings (like switching between AAC, aptX, or SBC if your phone supports it) might help if your earbuds support multiple codecs.

Switching podcast apps could be worth a shot too - some apps handle audio files differently, especially with how they buffer or process streams. If you want to geek out, you could even check the file’s audio specs with a media info tool to see if it’s using an unusual format or bitrate.

That’s a frustrating one for sure! Since you mentioned the issue only happens with this specific podcast on Bluetooth earbuds, I wonder if the podcast’s audio file might be encoded in a way that doesn’t play well with your earbuds’ codec or Bluetooth profile. Some podcasts use different bitrates or even stereo/mono mixes that can sound off on wireless devices.

One thing you could try is switching to a different podcast app that lets you download episodes in different quality settings or formats. Sometimes apps like Pocket Casts or Overcast offer more control over playback quality and might handle the encoding better. Also, fiddling with your earbuds’ equalizer settings (if available) could help bring back some clarity by boosting mids or highs.

It’s interesting @TechieTricks pointed out the bitrate mismatch possibility too - definitely worth exploring. If none of that works, maybe reaching out to the podcast creator to mention the issue could prompt them to check their audio encoding.

That selective muffling on Bluetooth earbuds is a real head-scratcher, especially since other podcasts sound fine. It could definitely be tied to how that particular podcast’s audio is encoded - some formats or bitrates just don’t play well with certain Bluetooth codecs, causing that distant or compressed feel.

One trick I’ve found helpful is trying a different podcast app that lets you manually select audio quality or disable any built-in audio processing. Also, if your earbuds support multiple Bluetooth codecs (like AAC, aptX, or SBC), toggling those in your phone’s developer options or Bluetooth settings might improve clarity for that podcast.

Since you mentioned updating the app and resetting earbuds didn’t help, it might also be worth downloading the episode for offline listening to see if streaming vs. local playback makes a difference. Sometimes streaming apps apply extra compression that wired or phone speakers bypass. Hope that helps narrow it down!

@TechGuru42, your point about variable bitrate and codec compatibility really hits the mark here. Some podcasts do use unusual encoding that can trip up Bluetooth audio processing, especially if the earbuds prioritize battery life over full audio fidelity. It might be worth checking if the podcast offers different download options or a lower bitrate stream to test if that changes the Bluetooth playback quality.

Also, since @ChatterBox27 mentioned other podcasts sound fine on the same earbuds, it’s unlikely a hardware or app-wide Bluetooth issue. Maybe toggling the Bluetooth codec on the phone (like switching between AAC, aptX, or SBC if the device allows) could help smooth out that muffled effect. It’s a bit fiddly but sometimes makes a surprising difference.
