My laptop’s webcam shows a black screen only on Zoom calls, but works fine elsewhere

I’ve been using my laptop for remote work, and recently I noticed that whenever I join a Zoom call, my webcam just shows a black screen. The weird part is, the camera works perfectly fine in other apps like Skype and the Windows Camera app. I tried restarting Zoom, reinstalling it, and even checked that Zoom has permission to access the camera in Windows settings. My laptop is running Windows 11, and the webcam is the built-in one. I also tested with an external USB webcam, and it shows the same black screen only on Zoom, so it doesn’t seem to be a hardware issue. My internet connection is fine, and no other video apps are running in the background during the calls. Has anyone else had this problem where Zoom’s video feed is black but the camera works elsewhere? Any ideas on what Zoom-specific setting or conflict I should look into? Would changing some Windows privacy settings help, or is this a known Zoom bug with certain Windows updates?

Since both your built-in and USB webcams show a black screen only on Zoom, it sounds like a software conflict or a Zoom-specific setting rather than hardware or basic permissions. One thing I've seen cause this is if Zoom's video renderer gets stuck or conflicts with certain graphics drivers - especially on Windows 11. You might want to try disabling hardware acceleration in Zoom's video settings or updating your graphics drivers to the latest version.

Also, double-check if any other app or background process might be grabbing the camera exclusively before Zoom starts. Sometimes, even if other apps aren’t visibly running, their background services can interfere. You could try a clean boot (disabling non-Microsoft startup items) and then launching Zoom to see if that helps isolate the issue.

Lastly, if you haven’t already, test with Zoom’s web client in a browser to see if the camera works there - this can help confirm if it’s the Zoom app itself or something deeper in

Since your webcam works fine in other apps but shows a black screen only on Zoom - even with an external camera - it sounds like a Zoom-specific software conflict. One thing that helped me before was disabling the "Hardware Acceleration" in Zoom's video settings. It’s under Settings > Video > Advanced. Sometimes Windows updates or driver changes can cause weird glitches with how Zoom interacts with the camera hardware.

Also, double-check if any other app might be holding onto the camera feed in the background. Even if you don’t see it running, some processes can lock the webcam and cause Zoom to fail. You might want to try a clean boot or check Task Manager for any suspicious camera-related processes.

Lastly, I’ve read a few reports about certain Windows 11 updates causing issues with Zoom’s video feed, so keeping both Zoom and your system fully updated could help. If none of this works, Zoom’s support forums sometimes have beta versions or

Hey @PennySaverPro, since your camera works fine in other apps and even an external webcam shows a black screen only on Zoom, it might be related to Zoom's video rendering settings. Have you tried disabling hardware acceleration in Zoom's video settings? Sometimes that conflicts with certain graphics drivers on Windows 11.

Also, double-check if any background apps might be "locking" the camera exclusively for themselves, even if they’re not obviously running. Some antivirus or privacy tools can do that silently. If you haven’t already, try launching Zoom as an administrator to see if that changes anything.

@CuriousFox613 mentioned permissions, but since you’ve covered that, the hardware acceleration tweak might be a good next step. Let us know if that helps or if you spot anything else unusual!

Hey @PennySaverPro, since you’ve ruled out hardware and basic permissions, one thing to check is whether Zoom’s video settings are set to use the correct camera. Sometimes Zoom defaults to a virtual camera or a disabled device, which causes that black screen. Go to Zoom’s video settings and explicitly select your built-in webcam or USB camera from the dropdown.

Also, I’ve seen cases where certain Windows privacy settings block apps from accessing the camera even if permissions look fine. Try toggling the “Allow desktop apps to access your camera” option off and back on in Windows Privacy settings, then restart Zoom. It’s a weird quirk but it helped me once.

If that doesn’t work, test disabling any background apps that might be using the camera simultaneously, like Teams or other conferencing tools, even if you think they’re closed. Sometimes they lock the camera feed exclusively, causing Zoom to show black.

Since your external USB webcam also shows a black screen only on Zoom, it’s likely a Zoom-specific software conflict rather than hardware or Windows permissions. Have you checked if Zoom’s video settings are set to the correct camera? Sometimes Zoom defaults to a disabled or virtual camera device.

Also, try disabling any video filters or enhancements in Zoom’s settings, as these can occasionally cause black screens. If you’re using any third-party camera software or virtual camera drivers, temporarily uninstall or disable them to rule out conflicts.

One more thing: run Zoom as an administrator to see if that changes anything. Some users reported that Windows 11’s security updates interfere with Zoom’s camera access unless it’s elevated.
