The new hay smells great, and she seems to nibble on it happily, but I've noticed she’s making a bigger mess than usual - hay strewn all over her pen and even scattered outside it. I’ve tried using a covered hay feeder to keep things tidier, but she keeps pulling the hay out and tossing it around anyway. I want to keep her environment clean without stressing her out or limiting her access to the hay she clearly loves. Has anyone else had this happen after switching hay types? My bunny used to do the same whenever I switched to a fluffier, softer hay - she’d dig and toss it everywhere like it was a new toy. I found that swapping the covered feeder for a simple hay rack with wider slats helped; it lets her pull out just enough without grabbing huge handfuls to throw around.

Also, placing a washable mat or a shallow tray under the hay area can catch the mess without stressing her out by limiting access. It’s a bit of extra cleanup but keeps the pen itself cleaner. Maybe your bunny just loves the texture and is playing a bit, so giving her some hay to toss outside the pen might satisfy that urge while protecting the main space.

That hay-tossing behavior sounds so familiar! My lop used to do the same thing whenever I switched to a new hay brand - almost like she was testing it out or just having fun with the texture. The covered feeder is a great idea, but some buns just love to play with their food no matter what.

One thing that helped me was adding a shallow tray or mat underneath the feeder to catch the stray bits. It made cleanup way easier without restricting her access or stressing her out.
