My NAS drive won’t wake up properly after scheduled sleep — any ideas?

I’ve got a Synology DS220+ set up as my home NAS, and I’ve scheduled it to sleep overnight to save power. The issue is that when I try to access it the next morning, it sometimes fails to wake up properly. The network share won’t mount, and I have to physically restart the NAS to get it back online. I’ve double-checked that Wake-on-LAN is enabled, and tried sending magic packets from my laptop, but that doesn’t always trigger a wake-up. I’m running the latest DSM version and haven’t installed any new packages recently. The NAS is connected via Ethernet to a gigabit switch, which seems fine because other devices on the same switch don’t have issues. I want it to reliably wake up on demand without me needing to physically reboot it. Has anyone dealt with similar wake-from-sleep problems on Synology devices? Are there any hidden settings or workarounds to force the NAS to wake consistently over the network? Also, could the switch or router settings be interfering with Wake-on-LAN packets even if other traffic is fine?

@TechWhiz23, the intermittent wake-up issue with your DS220+ sounds frustrating. Even with Wake-on-LAN enabled, some Synology models can be picky about the network environment. Since your switch seems fine for other devices, it might be worth checking if it supports "broadcast forwarding" or "directed broadcast" properly - WoL packets often rely on broadcasts, and some switches block those by default.

Also, I’ve seen cases where the NAS’s power-saving mode conflicts with certain network adapters or firmware versions. Try updating the NAS’s network driver if possible, or experiment with disabling "Enable LAN Wake-up" and re-enabling it after a reboot. Some users reported better reliability by setting the NAS to never sleep and instead scheduling shutdown/startup times via Synology’s Task Scheduler as a workaround.

Lastly, if your router has any firewall or packet filtering features, double-check those settings to ensure WoL packets aren’t being dropped.

It’s frustrating when Wake-on-LAN doesn’t behave consistently, especially since you’ve confirmed it’s enabled and you’re sending magic packets. One thing I’ve noticed with Synology NAS devices is that sometimes the network card’s power management settings can interfere with proper wake-up. You might want to check if there’s an option in the DSM control panel or via SSH to disable any "Energy Efficient Ethernet" or similar settings on the NIC. Those can cause the NAS to ignore WoL packets intermittently.

Also, even if your switch seems fine for general traffic, some managed switches or routers have settings that block or filter WoL packets, especially if they’re broadcast packets sent from a different subnet or VLAN. Double-check if your switch supports “directed broadcast” or if it’s configured to pass UDP packets on port 9 or 7 (common WoL ports). Sometimes enabling “port forwarding” or a static ARP entry on the router for the NAS’s

It sounds like you’ve covered the basics with Wake-on-LAN and DSM updates, which is great. One thing I’ve noticed with Synology NAS devices is that sometimes the network switch can silently block or not forward magic packets properly, even if regular traffic is fine. You might want to check if your switch has any “green Ethernet” or energy-saving features that could be putting ports into a low-power state and blocking WoL packets. Temporarily disabling those features or trying a different switch port could help isolate that.

Also, some folks have had better luck setting the NAS to never sleep but instead schedule it to power down and power back on at specific times via the Synology’s built-in power schedule. It’s a bit less elegant but more reliable if WoL is flaky. If you want to avoid physical restarts, that might be a workaround worth testing.

Sounds like your DS220+ is being stubborn about waking up despite WoL being enabled. One thing I’ve noticed with Synology devices is that sometimes the switch or router can block or drop those magic packets if they’re not on the same subnet or if IGMP snooping is enabled. Even if other traffic flows fine, WoL packets can be more sensitive. You might want to check if your switch has any “green” or energy-saving features that put ports to sleep, which can interfere with WoL.

Also, some folks have had better luck disabling the NAS’s scheduled sleep and instead relying on the built-in Wake-on-LAN feature exclusively, triggered from another device on the network. That way, the NAS isn’t trying to manage sleep internally and you control wake-ups manually. It’s a bit less automatic but more reliable in my experience.

Lastly, if your NAS supports it, try enabling “Enable network standby” in the DSM Control
