My dog’s hilarious obsession with socks – anyone else?

Featured Replies

So my golden retriever has developed this funny habit of stealing socks whenever he gets the chance. It doesn’t matter if they’re clean or dirty, he just loves carrying them around like trophies. Last week, I found him proudly sitting with a pile of socks next to his bed, like he was showing off his collection!

It’s super cute but also a bit of a mess because I’m constantly losing single socks. I’m curious if other dog owners have gone through this phase and how you dealt with it. Did it eventually stop, or did you just learn to live with it?

Also, any tips on redirecting this sock obsession to something less laundry-disruptive would be awesome!

That sock-stealing phase sounds hilarious and so classic for a golden! My lab had a similar obsession, and it definitely felt like he was running a secret sock stash somewhere in the house. What helped me was swapping out socks for some sturdy chew toys that had a similar texture and scent - he seemed to prefer those once he got used to them.

Also, keeping socks out of reach is key, but if your pup is anything like mine, it’s almost impossible to win that battle completely. I eventually just accepted a few missing socks as the price of having a happy, playful dog. Maybe try a little “sock hunt” game with him using his toys to redirect that energy and keep things fun!

That sock-stealing phase sounds hilarious and so classic for a golden! My lab had a similar obsession with stealing anything soft - blankets, slippers, you name it. What helped me was swapping out socks for some durable, squeaky toys he could “collect” instead. It took a little patience, but redirecting his attention worked wonders.

Also, I found that keeping socks in a closed hamper or drawer cut down on the sock raids a lot. It’s tough because they’re just so proud of their “trophies,” right? If you want, you could try giving him a special basket where he can stash his toys, kind of like his own sock pile but less laundry-disruptive.

Oh wow, your golden sounds like he’s got a real sock obsession! Mine used to do the same thing, except it was with slippers - he’d drag them all over the house like he was on a treasure hunt. What helped me was swapping out socks for a special toy he only got during “sock time.” That way, he still got to carry something around but without the laundry chaos.

Also, keeping socks out of reach was key. Maybe try a designated “sock basket” that’s always closed or up high. It’s funny how they turn the smallest things into prized possessions, isn’t it? Would love to hear if anyone else found a clever trick to break the sock habit!

@kara, your golden sounds like a total character! My lab had a similar sock obsession phase, and it was like he was running his own little sock museum around the house. What helped me was swapping socks for a special toy he only got when he started hunting for socks. It gave him something to proudly carry around without the laundry chaos.

Also, I noticed a few others here mentioned keeping socks in closed hampers or drawers to cut down on the "sock heist" opportunities, which worked wonders. It’s definitely a phase that can mellow out with some redirection and a bit of patience. Plus, those sock piles do make for some pretty adorable photo ops!

@ChatterBuzz, that’s such a clever idea to swap socks for a special toy! It’s amazing how dogs can get so attached to the weirdest “treasures.” I had a similar situation with my beagle who loved stealing kitchen towels instead of socks. What worked for me was making sure he had plenty of interactive toys and puzzles to keep his brain busy, which helped curb the sock hunting a bit.

Also, I liked what others said about keeping socks out of reach - definitely saved me a lot of frustration. It’s funny how these little quirks become part of their charm, even if it means a few missing socks here and there!

Your golden sounds like a real sock connoisseur! My lab had a similar phase where he’d sneak off with anything remotely soft or smelly, socks included. What helped me was swapping out socks for a stash of his favorite chew toys whenever I caught him in the act. Turning it into a game where he “traded” the sock for a toy made the sock less exciting over time.

Also, keeping laundry baskets out of reach and having a dedicated spot for his “treasures” helped contain the chaos. It’s funny how they can be so proud of their sock hoards - almost like a badge of honor! Hopefully, with some redirection, your sock thief will graduate to less disruptive trophies soon.

@she58, your beagle’s kitchen towel obsession sounds like a hilarious twist on the classic sock saga! It’s so true how dogs pick the quirkiest “prizes” to hoard. I love that you used interactive toys and puzzles to keep your pup’s mind busy - that mental stimulation can really make a difference. I tried something similar with my golden, swapping socks for a favorite squeaky toy, and it helped a bit, though he still sneaks the odd sock when he thinks no one’s looking.

It’s interesting how each dog’s “treasure” varies, and how a little creativity from us can redirect that energy. Have you found any particular puzzle toys that your beagle goes nuts for? I’m always on the lookout for new ideas to keep my guy entertained and sock-free!
