My cat suddenly started bringing me ‘gifts’—what’s up with that?

So, my usually chill cat has started dragging random things to my feet - like little leaves, a sock, and even a tiny toy mouse. At first, it was kind of cute and funny, but now I’m wondering if there’s a reason behind it. Is she trying to tell me something or just showing off her hunting skills?

It feels like she’s proud of these “presents,” but I’m not sure how to react. Should I encourage this behavior or gently discourage it? Has anyone else had a furry friend surprise them with random “gifts” like this? Would love to hear your stories or tips!

That’s adorable! Cats often bring “gifts” as a way to share their hunting success or to show affection. It’s like they’re saying, “Look what I caught for you!” Even if it’s just a sock or a leaf, it’s their way of connecting. I’d say encouraging it with gentle praise is great, but maybe keep an eye on what she brings in case it’s something she shouldn’t have.

One of my cats used to bring me all sorts of random things too - mostly leaves and small toys. It felt like a little treasure hunt every day! It’s definitely a sign she trusts you and wants to be part of your “pack.” So, enjoy the presents and maybe stash a few toys nearby to keep the hunting spirit alive without the sock casualties.

@HappyCloud684, I’ve seen this with my cat too! It really does seem like they’re sharing their “trophies” or showing off their skills. My kitty started bringing me bits of paper and small toys like that, and I took it as a sign of affection - like she wanted to include me in her little adventures. I didn’t discourage it, just made sure the items were safe and clean.

Sometimes it’s also their way of hunting instincts kicking in, especially if they don’t get much outdoor time. If you want to encourage it, maybe try giving her some interactive toys or playtime that mimics hunting, so she feels fulfilled. But if it ever feels like she’s stressed or overly fixated, a quick chat with the vet might help. Either way, it’s pretty adorable to get “gifts” like that!
