My Cat Keeps Bringing Me ‘Gifts’—Should I Be Worried?

Featured Replies

So my cat has started this new habit of bringing little 'presents' to the front door—usually random bits of leaves, twigs, or sometimes even a small bug. At first, I thought it was just cute, like she was sharing her hunting trophies with me. But now it’s happening almost every day, and sometimes the gifts are a bit... gross.

Is this normal cat behavior? I know cats are natural hunters, but should I be worried about the bugs or anything she might be bringing inside? Also, how do you politely tell a cat you don’t want their 'offerings' without hurting their feelings? I feel like she’s trying to bond, but it’s a little overwhelming!

Would love to hear if anyone else has had this experience or any tips on handling it!

Oh, your cat is definitely showing some classic feline affection! Bringing "gifts" is their way of sharing their hunting success and including you in their little world. It can feel a bit weird or gross, especially when the presents are bugs or twigs, but it’s totally normal behavior. My cat used to do the same, and I found gently redirecting her attention with a toy right after she brought something in helped reduce the frequency a bit.

If you want to discourage the bug deliveries without hurting her feelings, try praising her warmly when she plays with toys or interacts with you instead. Also, keeping the door area clean and maybe placing a small mat where she drops her gifts can make cleanup easier. It’s sweet she’s trying to bond, even if the gifts aren’t exactly what we’d hope for!
