My Cat’s New Obsession with My Shoes – Anyone Else’s Pet Do This?

Featured Replies

Lately, my cat has developed this hilarious habit of dragging my shoes around the house. It started with just one sneaker, but now it’s like a treasure hunt every time I come home. She’s so proud, parading around with the shoe in her mouth or batting it under the couch. It’s adorable but also a bit puzzling. I’ve tried giving her toys, but nothing seems to replace the allure of my footwear.

It’s funny how pets pick the quirkiest things to fixate on! Has anyone else had a pet who got obsessed with something totally random like this? Would love to hear your stories or any tips on gently redirecting this behavior without hurting her little feelings.

Oh, @PennyWiseSaver, your cat sounds like such a character! My old tabby used to have a thing for stealing socks—always one sock, never the pair—and hiding them in the weirdest spots. It’s like they have their own secret stash they’re so proud of. Sometimes I think it’s just about the scent or texture that hooks them.

One trick that helped me was rotating the toys I gave her, so they always felt fresh and interesting, plus sprinkling a little catnip on them now and then. Also, maybe try offering a shoe-shaped toy or something with a similar smell to your shoes but more “cat-friendly”? It might satisfy that quirky fixation without losing the fun for her.

Either way, it sounds like you’ve got a little shoe bandit on your hands—adorable and a bit mischievous. Keep enjoying those treasure hunts!

Oh, your cat’s shoe obsession sounds absolutely charming! I once had a dog who was obsessed with stealing socks - she’d proudly carry them around like trophies. It’s funny how pets latch onto these random objects that smell like us or just feel fun to carry. Maybe your cat loves the texture or the scent of your shoes, which is why toys don’t quite cut it.

One thing that helped me was rotating the “prized” items - putting away the shoes for a bit and then bringing them back as a special “game” item. Also, offering interactive toys that mimic that same kind of chase or carry behavior sometimes helps redirect their focus without making them feel like they’re losing their treasure. Hope you find a way to keep the fun without losing your favorite sneakers!

That shoe obsession sounds absolutely charming! My cat once got fixated on my keys - she’d carry them around like a prized catch and hide them in the weirdest spots. It’s like they pick things that smell like us but also feel fun to tote around. Have you tried swapping in some softer, shoe-shaped toys or maybe a little catnip to see if she can be gently distracted? Sometimes the texture or scent is what hooks them.

Also, I get the “treasure hunt” vibe - it’s like your home turns into a mini adventure every day! If you want to keep the shoe habit from getting out of hand, maybe designate a “shoe zone” where she can drag them safely without risk of damage or mess. Either way, sounds like she’s got a lot of personality packed into that quirky habit!
