cover topics that I know about and have studied in school.
1. Depression
2. Personality disorders
3.schizophrenia
Ok the first topic is depression so lets get started. It's normal to feel depressed at times,(feeling of overwhelming sadness, or guilt.) It is normal to have these feelings if a loved one dies. People may feel depressed if sudden traumatic event like this happens. This depression is normal and may last for weeks, or months.
It is however abnormal to feel depressed for a period of two weeks or longer. If you experience depression far longer then two weeks you may be suffering from major depressive disorder, which is also the most widely diagnosed psychological disorder. It affects 10% of the public. If you are diagnosed with this you will need to see a psychologist and will more then likely be medicated, or you can just seek therapy whichever one suits your case better. Causes of this are thought to be the amount of Serotonin in the brain which acts as a neurotransmitter. Not enough Serotonin in individuals, and they have a higher chance of being diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
The second topic is Personality disorders. Personality disorders is any behavior that is abnormal and breaks from being normal. Psychologist classify this by saying that everything we do is normal. Anything deviating away from this is abnormal. For example it is normal to cry when a loved one has been lost, but not normal to laugh. People who are diagnosed with this may show carelessness of their actions, and violate the rights of others with no feelings of guilt. They may also not be able to establish meaningful relationships.
The most know type of personality disorder is Antisocial disorder. This disorder is well know among the public for suiting a sociopath. Examples of this are as follow, conflicts with the law, violation of the rights of others, average intelligence and very charming. People who fall under this category almost never show anxiety in situations where it would be expected.
Last but not least is a psychological disorder that puzzles most psychologist today and there still is not a widely accepted theory of it.It is schizophrenia. This disorder affects about 1% of the population worldwide. People who are diagnosed with this may have gibberish speaking problems. Also jumping from idea to idea and not being able to remember what they just said in mid-sentence. Other cases are hallucinations, suffering from delusions , paranoid, and catonic. For example any one who prays to god can be classified as normal.Anyone who deviates away from this for example would claim to have heard god speak to them. Although some people may think that would be a normal part of religion to have these experiences with god, psychology says that person may be suffering from schizophrenia.Other classic examples of schizophrenia are people claiming to be god, hearing voices in their head, Believing things are there that aren't, paranoid that the FBI,CIA, or any other government agency is out to get them when they actually aren't. The last type of this disorder is catonic,in which individuals may hold unusual postures for minutes to hours.
