jailbreaking is for software issues..
jailbreaking is necessary depends on the status of your phone/player
jailbreak by the word itself, sets you free from the jail APPLE created..
--don't use blackra1n if you're on 3.1.3 firmware..

you can customize your look and so many other things, but it is kind of risky. You can restore your iPod at any time by plugging it into iTunes and clicking restore if you don't like it. As for software, if you have a newer iPod (3rd gen 32 or 64gb) the only jailbreak is blackra1n and it is tethered, which means u can't turn ur iPod off. If you have software version 3.1.3, there is no jailbreak for that yet. There are many more jailbreaks for first and second gen iPods, and they are untethered.

I jailbroke mine, and I thought of it as a great idea.

It is good for many features. The only problem is I think it affected the time it takes for my Ipod to turn on. That isn't a big problem to me however. I really don't use the Jailbroken features on my Ipod no more. It depends. if you get a good jailbreak or not.
