[Tutorial] Way's Of Securing Your Network
#1
Way's Of Securing Your Network - By Phizo

1. WEP/WPA Key Hacking : Ok if your using WEP change your network to WPA/WPA2 Encryption, Why?, If your using WEP Encryption you key can be cracked without even trying using backtrack 3, But!, If your using WPA Already, You can only be hacked using a keylist of numbers, Cracking WPA Is very difficult you need a keylist to crack them no other exceptions, But you can still be hacked so reguraly check your gateway for anyone in your network, You can disable/boot them off your network you know..
(Noobs read this : The gateway is your router/modem settings so you can find the IP by looking in your wireless icon next to the time, Put the IP in your browser.)

2. Administrator Passwords/Access Point : Ok, We have the Admin password to also gain access to your network this password will not be encrypted it would be something like : admin1234, 1234, password etc.., You can change your password in your gateway settings also, Wich you should be able to figure out, If not i will be of assistance, Your WLAN is setup with the defualt password so change it imediatly.

3. Mac Filtering : Ok you have an 'IP Address' wich is like numbers for example 243.34.232.3, And you also have a thing on your system/network called a 'Mac Address', I call them a "Computer FingerPrint" They are what your computer is and what the police try and trace besides your IP Address. Mac Filtering is a method of gaining access control to your network, If you setup Mac Filtering the hackers wont be able to try and get control of your network, Only your systems have control of the network. In order to use MAC filtering you need to find (and enter into the router or AP) the 12-character MAC address of every system that will connect to the network, Mac Address can be spoofed/changed or what i would say is manipulated for temporary change, So your whole Mac Address would be different so no hackers could access your systems or network.

4. Reduce Your WLAN Transmitter : You won't find this feature on all wireless routers and access points, but some allow you lower the power of your WLAN transmitter and thus reduce the range of the signal. Although it's usually impossible to fine-tune a signal so precisely that it won't leak outside your home or business, with some trial-and-error you can often limit how far outside your premises the signal reaches, minimizing the opportunity for outsiders to access your WLAN *Note i didn't create this transmitter part*

5. Remote Administration : Some WLAN Routers have the ability to use 'Remote Administration' Wich lets the hacker control your netword (Access) And the hacker would be able to do anything he likes to your network, How do we stop this?, We can stop this by going into your windows firewall and look for 'Remote Administration' Make sure it's disabled if it is your all good, If you havn't done it yet....DO IT NOW!

Good bit of info Smile

Maybe this could be incorporated or just as some more info for people;

1. WPA2 is better than WPA, the longer the password the better and the obvious numbers, letters, symbols.
2. You can find your default gateway from the command line; windows > start > run > cmd > ipconfig
Linux i think is ' iwconfig ' from the terminal
Once you have it you enter it into your browsers address bar,

eg. (The 3 main ones)
http://192.168.0.1
http://192.168.1.1
http://192.168.2.1

Extra info:

Disable SSID broadcast, this stops people from seeing your internet when they scan, eg. in windows you get a list of Wireless - yours wont show. But.. you say, can i still connect? It's not there!. > Yes, you can connect manually Smile

Good tutorial! I currently use WPA for my Wi-Fi access, with a very secure 51 character password Smile

Wow, i'd love to re-type that when a new machine connects. :o

You could also hide your ssid for wireless and the comand in linux that is equal to ipconfig in windows (IF your running windows me or any of the 9x series windows like 98 the comand is winipcfg) is ifconfig
