Any operating system needs certain requirements, Just download Windows 7 Advisor which will analyze your system for Windows 7 requirements.
Depends on what you're running
64bit: 4GB RAM Minimum (Recommended)
32bit: 2GB RAM Minimum (Recommended)

If you have ran Vista fine, I'd almost bet that 7 would run fine. My mother has a desktop that came with XP, but was "Vista compatible". Vista was slow as piss on it, but 7 runs decently smooth. 3 Ghz dual-core processor with only 512MB ram.
My laptop is a 2Ghz dual-core with 4GB RAM, and it runs perfectly with 7 (but better with Linux ;) ) when I chose to use it.

If you don't have a minimum of 2Gb RAM on any Windows 7 version though you won't see the true benefits of using Windows 7 at all in my opinion.
32 bit versions have less strict requirements though, so go for it, you'll be fine if you have 4GB memory for sure

IMO, I have just recently switched from my old laptop (had Vista) to my new laptop (has Windows 7) and let me just say the difference is great. Windows 7 is so much better than Vista and I have ran into 0 problems as I had with Vista.
