I'd only use the .bat color command, I don't use cmd very often.

Or you can type
color help
And change the color with commands Smile

and have to do that every time? lol

That's not a permanent option like setting the colors from the property menu is.

On my windows XP computer, it stays changed.
Not on my windows 7 though.
So you are correct I guess.
