Actually there's a hell of a lot of professionals that use Sony Vegas rather than Final Cut, mainly because it's incredibly simple to use, meaning you can do simple editing a lot quicker than you can in Final Cut. They're quite similar pieces of software, and although I would say Final Cut Pro is a lot better than Sony Vegas, it is just my personal preference. Some of FCP's features are slightly more advanced.
I think a better answer to this thread would be, it depends what you want to do...
If you're wanting to do quick stuff like for example making gaming montages for Youtube, then Sony Vegas is a good choice. Why? Because it's easier to learn that Final Cut, meaning you don't need any experience at all to do some cool stuff. (Which is why many see it as a beginners program).
If you're wanting to do more advanced stuff, for example editing films or animations, then Final Cut Pro will suit you a lot better.
To sum up, they're pretty similar bit's of software, but Final Cut is just that little bit more advanced, which is why you pay more money for it. Also if you're looking for a future career in video editing, you're more likely to get the job over somebody else who uses Sony Vegas.
Although if you know how to use both, along with After Effects, like I do, then you're on your way to making a lot of money in the future.
