Google Chrome =Chromuim (Just without the tracking)
Messenger = Pidgin
IRC Client = Irssi/XChat
Voice Chat = Mumble/Skype (Skype is basically dead)

No OS can said he is best than other : Linux can have virus, like mac and windows.
On Linux and mac, a virus should ask the root password to infect the computer, or else it is not very dangerous.
Windows is the 1st OS on the market and thats why it's he who has the more virus.
A very good distro for newbies is Ubuntu.
