What kind of maths is this?

What kind of maths is that? What is it called? You can answer the problem too (show your working) if you want but I just need to know the name so I can search it on a website. This is for my GCSE Mock Exam tomorrow.

Seems like pretty basic Algebra 1 material; you should get the hang of it in no time. These are "linear equations".

I would STRONGLY recommend first checking out the video made by Sal Khan:

Otherwise, try Purple Math:

or Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_equation

But just as a basic rundown: These equations are in standard form - "Ax+By=C". You'll want to get each equation into Slope-Intercept form - "y=mx+b" with "m" as the slope and "b" as the y-intercept. Then you can plot each line by using the idea of "rise over run", or the change in Y coordinates over the change in X coordinates (a slope of 1 would be a diagonal going from the bottom left of a graph to the top right, and a slope of -1 would be the opposite).

It does help thanks! I knew it had something to do with Y=mx+c but I guess my brain was tied in a knot.

All you really have to don is solve A, B, C and D to find the x and y intercepts.

To find the y intercept, let x = 0.

To find the x intercept, let y = 0

Then solve like a normal eqn.

Really easy ;) Fundamentals of a lot bigger things though.

Its a linear equation in the form of y = mx + b where m is equivilant to the slope of the line.

There's a lot more advanced stuff than this with graphics including the Exponential/ Log function, Quadratic, and a few other equations. This is as simple as it gets. In a later math course you'll probably learn about conics and logarhythm equations to add onto this to make different functions on the graphs.

Parabolas, Hyperbolas, Circles, Exponential curves, and logs with asymptotes... Have fun Smile

Most of that stuff you'll find in the equation that looks like AX^2 + BXY + CY^2 + DX + EY + F = 0
