[TuT] Animated Text Shine - PS [TuT]
#1
Heres a quick tutorial on how to create a animated text shine using Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Step 1:

Create a new document 500x100px.

Create a new layer, and delete your background layer.

Add your text using Photoshops text tool, and edit the font, style & size to what you think looks best. Type whatever text you want in the text box.

In this example, I have used:

Font: Verdana
Style: Bold
Size: 72pt
Colour: #888888

Step 2:

Next you need to create a new layer and place it above your text layer.
Make sure the layer is transparent.
Using your Polygon lasso tool, create a rectangle shape, angled to the left as shown below.

Select your gradient tool, and, using the "Reflected Gradient" tool, set up the following settings:

Fill your marquee with the gradient tool by dragging the line from the left side of the marquee, to the right.

Step 3:

With your shine layer selected, click on "Layer" in the menu bar, and then click "Create Clipping Mask".
At this stage, you can also choose to add various layer styles onto your main text layer.

Now we will work on the animation. Click "Window" and then "Animation". You will be presented with your animation manager. If your animation manager opens showing frames as shown below, click the bottom right icon to switch into time-line mode.

Click the arrow down on your shine layer, and, with your time indicator at the beginning of the animation, click on the stopwatch icon next to "Position" to insert a key frame. You will then need to drag your shine that your created and move it to the start of your text.

Next, simply move your time indicator to 02:00f, drag your shine to the end of your text, and a new key frame will be automatically added.
If you press play (Spacebar), you should get a preview of your animation.

Extra Steps:

- Lower the transparency on your shine layer for a more realistic look.
- Click the top right icon on your animation manager and select "Document Settings". Change the duration to 0:00:02:01, and play around with the frame rate to alter the speed of your shine.

Saving...

To save your animation, go to File > Save for Web & Devices.
It should automatically choose to save it as a GIF file.
At the bottom right, you have some playback settings.
Make sure you select "Forever" on Looping Options.
Press play to see what it will look like.

Heres my very basic outcome:

Hope this helps, I know its pretty basic and looks rubbish but hopefully you can go on to making some more advanced stuff.

This can be done with CS4 as well, I should probably take CS5 off the title as it has no relevance what so ever.

Nice one, you've depicted it to be done quite easy but it's hard, lol.

Wow, so simple, but it looks so nice.
I never really got the hang of GIFs in Photoshop, but this describes it really nicely, thank you.
