[TUT]Great USB tools and how to use them. Part 2
#1
Hello Support Forums, I'm gonna be posting my second tutorial about some great portable apps (USB tools) and how to use them. I work on a lot of computers and networks and this is a compiled list of some of the best programs I have run across in my journey through the net. All of the programs are free and this list and my first list combined will all fit onto a 1GB USB or flash drive with room to spare.

FYI: I will not be able to post as many pictures for the tutorial as I did in the first one since the image limit has been reduced to 10 if needed I will post links to the pics. Sorry.

Link to my first TUT: http://www.supportforums.net/showthread.php?tid=7009

INFO: All sizes are reflected after the program is INSTALLED.

OK let's get started.

Dexpot
----------------------
HOME: http://dexpot.de/index.php?id=home
DOWNLOAD: http://dexpot.de/index.php?id=danke
TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware (For private use)
SIZE: 7.28 MB

Dexpot is a Multi-desktop virtual environment that fits onto a USB stick.

How it works:

Dexpot is very easy to use. Once you install it onto your USB stick just find the directory:

dexpot_157_portable_r1394

open it up find the dexpot exe double click it and you now have 4 desktops to use at your disposal.

In the above picture you will see your new desktop icons in the taskbar.

PeaZip
------
HOME: http://peazip.sourceforge.net/
DOWNLOAD: http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/peazip_portable
TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware
SIZE: 9.69 MB

Peazip is an Open Source file and archive manager

Features:

PeaZip is a file archiver (compression) utility for Windows with a great array of features including:

* Edit, save and restore archive layouts
* Supported formats:
o Pack / unpack: 7Z, ARC, BZ2, GZ, PAQ/LPAQ, PEA, QUAD, TAR, UPX, and ZIP
o Unpack only: ACE, ARJ, CAB, DEB, ISO, LHA, RAR, RPM and more archive types...
* Apply multiple filters to archive contents
* Archive splitting and joining
* Encryption and secure deletion
* File comparison and checksum / hash (CRC, MD5, SHA...)

How it works:

Peazip works like most other archive managers (7Zip, Winrar etc.). Find the Peazipportable directory on your USB stick and open it. Find and open the PeaZipPortable.exe which will open a file directory. Find the zip/rar file you want to extract, right click on it and hit extract.

As you can see in the picture above there are many other options to choose from.

Add let's you add something to the rared file.
Convert let's you convert it to another file format (7Zip, Split, Tar etc.).
Extract dumps the rared file to the current directory.
Extract all to: Let's you choose which directory to dump too.
Test lets you test if the rared file is good or corrupt.
Info gives you information on the chosen file.
List also gives you info on the chosen file.
Enter Password/keyfile lets you input a password or chose a keyfile for a locked rar file.
Open with lets you chose what to open the file with.
File tools do a number of different things such as splitting or joining files.

Many people never use rar/zip files so if you're fixing someones computer and need to download a rar/zip file this program comes in great handy so you don't have to find, download and install a archive manager on someones computer that your going to have to remove when your done anyways.

MessenPass
----------------
HOME: http://www.nirsoft.net/
DOWNLOAD: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mspass.html
TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware
SIZE: 87.4 KB

MessenPass let's you recover passwords from the following IM applications:

* MSN Messenger
* Windows Messenger (In Windows XP)
* Windows Live Messenger (In Windows XP/Vista/7)
* Yahoo Messenger (Versions 5.x and 6.x)
* Google Talk
* ICQ Lite 4.x/5.x/2003
* AOL Instant Messenger v4.6 or below, AIM 6.x, and AIM Pro.
* Trillian
* Trillian Astra
* Miranda
* GAIM/Pidgin
* MySpace IM
* PaltalkScene
* Digsby

How it works:

Once you extract the files to your USB stick find the MSPass directory and open it. Find and double click the MSPass application. Once the application opens it will find the passwords for any IM service (from above) installed.

Enjoy!

PasswordFox
----------------
HOME: http://www.nirsoft.net/
DOWNLOAD: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/passwordfox.html
TYPE OF SOFTWARE: Freeware
SIZE: 61.3 KB

PasswordFox is a password recovery tool that will find stored passwords for websites on Firefox.

How it works:

Once you extract the files from the download to your USb stick find the directory PassWordFox and open it. Find the application Passwordfox in the directory and double click it and it will open the program. The program will instantly find any passwords stored in Firefox.

Other info: This will not work on browsers where things such as cookies, caches, active logins etc. are either always disabled or clear on shutdown of the browser.

That's about it for now I have other programs that I will share at a later time please enjoy all of the free and/or OpenSource programs.

A few other programs I use that I will not post instructions in the tutorial about are:

Infrarecorder portable - free portable and user friendly burning program
Skype portable - Portable Skype
Sumatra Portable - Free portable PDF viewer
CCleaner Portable - Free Multi-tool that clears temp files and fixes registry errors among other things (the newest version also has a drive wiper which will over-write empty space on your hdd, flash drive, usb stick etc. in case there's recoverable stuff on there it will make it unrecoverable).

Good day all
