The free version of Avast is good,
I like the way it talks when it updates and finds a virus etc, looks nice, good detection rate, real time scanner.

I prefer Avast or Avira, never liked AVG - looks fugly/cheap and detection rate isn't the best.

I also have other Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware/Anti-Spyware stored on my computer and if i become suspicious i will use them temporarily then disable them again. Should only really have one Anti-Virus running, but you can have as many Anti-Spyware progs as you desire.

I have a heap of add-ons for my browser that keep me safe, along with other things.

All of the ones I'm currently using are freeware, besides Avast Pro..but Avast home edition is the next best thing.

Play around in internet options in the control panel and set your security levels to high under both security and the privacy tab, also in the advanced tab have a snoop and see if any changes are needed.
Disable auto-complete if you haven't already and all that jazz blah blah blah etc etc etc.

There is really no 'best' thing as such, it's more to do with personal taste,
such as in the great Windows OS debate.

There are a number of useful applications, browser enhancements and
security related practices, that you can use to help you maximise your safety when online.

i use eset nod32 anti virus.. it is up to date and it deletes autorun.inf that is very much in all computers in my town.. it is also useful for recently made viruses..
