Partitioning

I want to create two separate partitions, one for my data and one for my operating system. Then I want to move all my data to the data partition and install Windows 7 on my OS partition.

Can anyone help me out? I have absolutely no idea how to partition and I don't want to install Win7 and lose all my files in the process. (I have no way of backing up data)

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: Oh darn, I just remembered that I attempted to install Win7 on my desktop before and it wouldn't boot up for some reason. I guess I'm going to go with Linux.

Err, I said I wanted to install Window 7. I guess I forgot to mention I don't HAVE Windows 7. I'm currently running Windows XP.

Hmmm, I don't have a whole lot of experience with partitions because I never create any, but I think you'll have to either reformat your hard drive or you will lose data. See if you can borrow a hard drive for a day to store all your files on and then do it.

Just start the installation and during the initial setup you'll come to a page to choose a partition to install on. Either format your current one or in your case you need to create a new partition.

The setup has better installation instructions, but this is what it should look something like:

No problem buddy, I've never used Windows 7 or installed it but I assumed from the Win XP installation. The screen shot just confirmed I was correct.

You could try hiren boot cd , there are lot of awesome tools which will help you getting your problem fixed.

I tried to make a partition once for linux before I knew you could dual boot, all the tuts told me the same thing, but my computer didn't have the option
