Where did the word "420" come from? There are many urban legends concerning the origin of 420. Some have said it is for teatime in Holland. Hitler's birthday happens to be on 4/20, but it is doubtful that the true origin of peaceful hippies smoking pot on 4:20 happens to come from the date of a mass murders birthday. 4:20 originated as a time rather than a date.
According to High Times Magazine, the term 420 came from San Rafael high school in 1971. It was used by a group of prankster teenagers who called themselves the Waldo's, would meet after school by a Louis Pastor statue to imbibe in the illicit activity of smoking reefer. It quickly grew over the decades and now has become the code for getting high.
The date has also become a special day in the marijuana counter culture. It is referred to as the stoners new year. Many marijuana smokers are married on this day. A large number of marijuana and related festivals are held on this date. Unfortunately, the columbine shootings were on this date and it has become an urban myth that 420 was created in respect to this horrible shooting. In reality, 420 had been in regular use at least by 1995 or sooner, among the underground drug culture.
