Have you been a forum administrator?
#41
I've managed a lot of forums, big and small. The biggest being about 560,000 posts. The smallest being just a couple of thousand. I learnt to be a little more lenient... You don't have to get ban/warning happy just because a small, minor rule was broken by a new member.

I was admin on quite a few sites, even moderator on a couple of "big" sites, which I won't mention due to what there about. But what I learnt? The world is tough, people lie and moderating is bloody time consuming ! Hehe

Share a few tips from your experience.

Yes I've had some experience with running my own Vbulletin based forum, although working equally with both your members and staff would be a good tip as well as posting regularly keeping your member base updated.

What I've learned as staff on HF served me well as an admin as well, which is professional behavior. That is, to deal with issues with patience, and be polite to people, regardless of how I feel at the moment. It's not as easy as it may seem at first to ignore your own ego/emotions and replace them with the community's values when representing the said community.

I moderate a forum focused around content I can't discuss here, it definitely requires a far different style of moderation than the norm, it's also invite only, which is kind of nice, banned members are pretty much gone for good (we don't do temp bans).

I've been a mod, never an administrator however. I don't know if I could handle the power.

Hmm...
I never was an administrator,
but I am a moderator on www.**************.com Smile
(linking to a forum with illegal activities on it can risk a warning or a ban)
