Don't text. Talk on the phone.
I'd honestly say the easiest thing to talk about is everyday life. Ask how each other's days went. What made them so bad or good. Things you like or don't like. All you need to do is promise yourself you wont make it awkward and it really won't be awkward. I am probably one of the most socially awkward people in person, but on the phone I can keep anyone on the phone for quite a while without it being awkward.
Whatever you do, for gosh sake don't talk about politics or anything to do with politics. It can really make people fight and think differently of them.
