I have experience with both - Intel and AMD - but mostly on laptops, so I can't tell which DESKTOP processor is better for me.
But when I was choosing a laptop, the #1 criteria was a Intel processor.
I had an older laptop with AMD processor (it was just 1.6GHz SemPR0N). It was a bit old so I understand that things may have changed, but my uncle has an AMD (Turion X2 @ 1.9GHz) laptop, which he bought two years ago and it also overheats easily.
I think Intel Mobile processors have better performance, less power-consumption then AMD ones and they always stay cool.
My laptop (I'm currently on it) has a Core2Duo processor (running at 2GHz) and it's always cool and quiet + my battery can last up to 3+ hours when idle.
