Apple make their money from the harddware; all you are paying for is a aluminum box. Apple know that you can install it on other PC's; which is why they don't allow doing it. Because then they wuoldn't get as much money. I bet if they were like Windows and only based themselves on the Software side of things; no one would care about them.

There are many advantages that go along with having the hardware tied to the software, that's part of what makes OS X so hassle-free, no need to worry about drivers etc
