Hello,
Ubuntu is a good Linux based O/S. There is an application called WINE (http://www.winehq.org/) that "lets you run Windows software on other operating systems".
Alternatively, go back to XP SP3 (See http://tinyurl.com/c54epnn for more details). As others have said it is relatively stable and much quicker/less troublesome than Vista.
Support for XP ends on April 8th 2014, so you have a couple of years left before it goes EOL (End if Life) i.e. no more security patches to plug the remaining vulnerabilities that malware and virus writers will not doubt work to exploit.
