Why do Americans pronounce words differently?

Same with these words, they word them differently -

Colour > color
Honour > honor
Trousers/Jeans > pants
Car > vehicle

Here's a Wikipedia page referring to the differences in the English and American spelling-

That might help you understand a little better, I'm reading through it myself but I don't understand the reason behind it all either.
