Modding games is actually pretty easy. Since it runs on your computer Windows messages get sent in to your system just like anything else. Animation on your taskbar, your start menu, explorer navigation, etc... And if you find out which windows message gets sent, you can hook it and either block it, or send a message of your own using the Win API (user32.dll).
Nothing truly special about modding games, but sometimes it can be fun if you need to cure some boredom. Even the process of making a little cheat engine is pretty fun
