Ok guys I appreciate your trying to help but I don't think you are understanding the issue. On my windows XP machine photoshop worked fine and I have been a long time user of it and never had this issue before. I installed the x64 version on a windows 7 machine and WHETHER OR NOT I SET BACKGROUND WHITE OR TRANSPARENT it always shows up transparent. In fact, in the picture I have posted above, THE BACKGROUND WAS SET TO WHITE, which you can see in the layer preview. However, it still appears transparent and any changes or brushes I make do not show up in the main image, only on the layer preview. An even stranger thing is if I zoom up to around 200% the image appears as it should. That is what makes me think this is a graphics card issue, but I have no way of knowing....which is why I posted here.
Here is a comparison of the problem i am having. This is a new 1440 x 900 image (my desktop size) on a BLACK background.
Zoomed in at 200% everything appears correctly.
Any other zoom and I have the transparent checkerboxes showing up.
