I've played FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, FFX-2, and FFXII. Final fantasy 12 was a fairly decent game, but it was long, and the storyline wasn't as good as X or VII in my opinion. I would rate FFVIII as the second best for me, and if you get a chance you should look into playing it 
It was right up there beside 7 in my opinion, but if you do end up playing it, get used to the old PS1 graphics, and try not to judge the game based on that lol. It was a little better graphics than FF7, but the characters didn't look like they had circular sphere hands. 4 disks in that game as well instead of 3 like FFVII.
