Also hamsters aren't really recommended for kids, I think. They're naturally nocturnal, so unless the kids is up all night, they may be bored by a pet that will mostly sleep during the day. They can be up during the day though; like some of them may adjust to your daily schedule, but they're still naturally nocturnal. Might want to try a bigger hamster. The one I have is a teddy bear hamster; they're bigger than dwarfs. Mine is a freaking ninja. He has a three-level cage and he scales the side bars like they're nothing I think an eight year old will be fine with a hamster though as long as they understand that they can't expect the hamster to be active all day and that they are very delicate creatures :3
