I don't think women necessarily save more than men. Saving and spending habits depend on many factors: maturity, ambition, earning capacity, peer pressure and family history are some. For those women who do save more than their male partners, I assume that they are conscious of the need to be financially independent, to safeguard their personal future.
Women who are not financially independent are vulnerable in ways that men are not. When a woman raises a child alone (and many women do, with or without child support) there is the added responsibility of supporting a dependent. When divorces happen, women who are dependent on their husband's income are forced to enter the workplace.
Single women benefit from partnerships in their 20s and early 30s, when two-income households ease the pressure of rent and living expenses. But the social reality is that as women age, it can (arguably) be more difficult to establish a family or a permanent relationship - which leads to the pressure and limitations of single-income living. Conversely, it is socially acceptable for men to continue forming partnerships with women their age or younger.
In short, relationships are an economic partnership, but the effects are not felt until later in life. Women can't afford to be unprepared.
