FirefoxWiz Wrote:Papa Wrote:I'm not too wild about it either
but it has better security than MyBB and security is a real concern since people will be putting
addresses, phone numbers, pictures of the kids, etc. on it. Not really. You can make
it so guests can not see the forum at all, or you can make it so guests can see the forum but
cannot read the threads inside the forum. Which would mean they couldn't see any pics or
addresses! ;)
Plus, you can make MyBB Registration, so it is Admin
Activation, so you have to activate their account, so outsiders can't see anything untill you
aprove them.
You can edit permissions to do that sort of stuff.

My concern is more with someone hacking it. I know MyBB has had some
problems in the past.

phpBB is another board.
( can be
found here.)
Now, in my opinion, phpBB is absolutly horrible (I place it in the
same category as SMF).
I started out with phpbb, and there is NO customization on it. None.
Zero, zip, zilch.
As a matter of fact, I have it installed on my localhost right now, and
there is no features with it, compared to mybb.
Now, I've never really tried IPB, but I had
the free version of it, and it has hardly any features too. (I got mine from invisionpowerforfree,
and it was run by EDK, who ran the phpbb4free forums, and he was a total dictator.... I had to
get out of that mess.)
So, hence, I have moved to MyBB.

Yeah, I know MyBB has
had it's problems, but then, every type of forum has been hacked in the past (that I know of)
And the newer versions of MyBB have much better security, plus when you turn the version
numbers off (they're off by default) hackers can't find your forum on Google that easily!

Heh, I had the same problems. EDK's favorite word
when users asked for a mod to be installed was REJECTED.
Yeah,
phpBB hardly has ANY customisation options... whereas MyBB................

Thanks, ISR. Customization is very important to me. Another problem is
that I know didley squat about installing something like that on a server. If I get up the nerve I
might try it because, like you and FW, I'm not that impressed with the interface of SFM.

Proboards has never been hacked and I like it's customization capacity. I
got to where I could do scripts and some pretty fancy stuff (for ME) when I was helping Mama
Spot with her forum. Problem with PB is that, to my knowledge, they don't have a
down-loadable version. You've gotta use their servers and either put up with ads or pay them
seven or eight bucks a month for the rest of your natural life.

Setting up MyBB is very simple.
As a matter of fact, I've
installed about 20 times, on different servers, and test runs on my localhost.
I even
made a video on installing MyBB on localhost (which is basicly the same as installing it on a
server on the web), but, if you'll give me time to upload it, and then you download it, I'll do
it.
PS> IT'S 150 MEGABYTES!!!

But I do have instructions wrote up, for installing MyBB on
localhost.
I could change it, and have it for installing on a regular server, if you
want.
The instructions are pretty down to earth, as I was the one who wrote it up
