When I first started using HTML, I used this site for tags. They basically cover the basics, and if you scroll down, there is a nice chart full of common codes used, that could make your site look cool in the smallest of details:

I know this is an old thread, but I'll post my favorite tutorial site here in case anyone else reads this. I really enjoy lynda.com's tutorials. Granted, the XHTML tutorials are quite tedious, considering the narrator is terrible, but there're great tutorials on using Dreamweaver, which also consequently teach CSS. The narrator in the Dreamweaver tutorials is amazingly funny and informative. If you can get your hands on "Dreamweaver CS4 Essential Training", you'll learn a LOT.

i used these a good few years ago, Learn basics from that website, then try putting yourself in selfmade scenarios, its fun and you teach yourself.
