You could some way allow users to use the "inline moderation", but limited so they can only see the "resolved" option. When they select that, it will automatically change it to [Resolved].

Yeah I know. However, since Omni already has something done up to allow people to close their own threads for certain gid's, I suggested this.

Just came across this plugin - http://www.mybbcentral.com/thread-2834.html and thought of this thread.

Thats a thread prefix, meaning if for example if your posting a visual basic question you can set the prefix of the thread topic to [2006] visual basic help!, [2008] visual basic help!, [2010] visual basic help!
To specify which version your using.

True, but you could also use it with the prefix [Resolved] and edit it when the thread get's resolved. You could of course just change the title but it was just something I came across that made me think of this thread.

If you're interested I'm doing this myself and it'll be checked by MyBB SQA, and then I'll release it and it'll be used on the MyBB forums (that's why SQA are checking it). It's looking good so far, should meet people's needs. For putting [solved] in the title, I wouldn't actually edit the thread title, just display [solved] before the threads, so it does the same thing but doesn't interfere with the thread itself and is easily removable. Better way of doing it IMO.
