HF Support Feather

I completely agree with you Smile

Which points right to this thread. It's not that this has to be more visible when the award itself is mainly invisible.

Hmm... Well then that may be okay. I can still see the possibility of some not seeing that though as "friends" on HF do refer each other here and spread word about the award themselves. Although I never knew it was linked to this thread. I haven't seen where it was advertised on that forum, and even if I did it wouldn't have been linked to this thread at the time I joined SF...

Not bad then Smile

After a while on SF though, regardless of whether members are also members at HF, people usually recognize the feather, as it's constantly debated on the forums here though as you could agree i'm sure lol. If there's any soulfully devoted members to this forum, regardless of where they come from, they will eventually find out about the feather, without even visited HF in the past.

Visibility is still there in that case, but I do agree with trying to keep it mainly "invisible" as it really doesn't have any relevance to SF from a forum community standpoint. It all goes back to HF.

Overall though, I'd say this is a good step forward, so I'm not complaining here. Keep it going Smile

The new strict rule on getting the award will stop people referring members just for them to get the award.

How exactly though? If someone asks a member on HF "Hey, how did you get that award with the feather", the person is most likely going to reply "At this forum, you need 100 posts http://supportforums.net"

They will join, and start their spamming adventure most likely because they're eager to get back to HF with a new fancy shiny award to brag about, and the sooner the better.

True but they have to fill in the form and PM Sam/Omniscient to get accepted for it.

Yes, but AFTER they spam their way to that 100 posts. Like I said, it will probably stop the award, but that's not the concern here, it won't stop the spamming. They are not going to fill in the form before they meet the requirements, so they're going to go try to meet the requirements first, and the main thing they are thinking is "100 posts..."

True, I agree with you now. Spam will still remain a big problem.

I'm glad to see something was finally done about this. It should really bump the quality of the forum up. People shouldn't really spam the hell out of the forum just for an award. This forum offers a lot of stuff that Hack Forums doesn't, it's two different communities entirely. It's good to see Sam has decided to handle this as well.
I thought it would be more than he could handle, until I read Omni's post above, should be easy enough for him.

Every forum will have spammers. This isn't going to be the perfect solution to stop it, as a whole. But it will still help the forum a little bit, which is good to see.

Why not just stop the feather award all together at HF?
That would solve all the problems. Perhaps changing its purpose or something over at HF.

And that's all I was after, seeing as how we didn't have a great solution to avoid or prevent spammers for a LONG time here.

"Every forum has spammers" -- I believe this is an attempt to avoid the fact though that the spammers on this particular forum are created though by something that was intentionally added here though. Other forums don't have things that create spammers like SF does, because it's definitely something that forum owners want to avoid. But that is fine, to each their own in terms of a forum. But if you do have something that you know generates spammers, there should be prevention methods set in place to allow whatever it is that generates spammers, while getting rid of that "spammer" factor.

There's always going to be HF members though that don't care one bit about SF. So whether they know that their posts are slightly lacking in effort put towards the wordage before hitting that post button, it doesn't matter. As long as they get an award in the near future.

Nonetheless, it's good to see finally, some preventatives though that can reduce spamming here if Omni insists on keeping that award though.
