Darwin =! OS X - 'nuff said.
I got my MBP with snow-leopard but I really can't compare it to anything except the iMacs at school; but it's definitely worth it from what I've read.

We have them in the music and media buildings, we also have banks of 13" MacBooks at the library, the music/media thing is understandable but I think the school wasted money on the macbook banks seeing as 99% of the time you use Windows on them anyway (the teacher makes you use Windows-only programs.etc)

It's a definite improvement over Leopard. It looks the same on top, but under the hood it has had some significant tweaks. From the hour or so I spent using it, it seemed so much more smoother and faster than Leopard. It also takes up less space on the hard drive and Finder has been completely rewritten.
Fun fact: The alleged "Upgrade" disc is actually the full version of SL. Using the Chameleon bootloader you can use the Upgrade disc to install it on non-Apple hardware.
