Well really to start a forum you need to be on for more than 1 hour a day to begin with. You have to market the heck out of it lol. Other than that it is a nice little write up

Yeah... more like spending hours a day just making the template perfect then doing seo then doing invites and advertisements and forum maintenance etc. etc. etc.

Ya it would be alot of work to get the forum alive. I wouldn't recommend starting a free forum you dont have alot of control over it.
