But I agree with Fragma. Simple borders can look good, but they can look bad as well.

Buzz Lightyear: I don't consider a gradient to have to be something created by the gradient tool. It's still a gradient as long as it goes from dark to light or vise versa. In the left side, that gradient looks a little odd

That too, I forgot to mention it, but why isn't it a gradient? it reaches over to the left side of the border, and it gets lighter to the right :S

You might have not used the gradient tool, but that would be considered a gradient to me in my opinion.

Infinity is right by the way.

A gradient can be colour or shade. And obviously, your lighting effects the colours & shades that are shown, in turn, creating a gradient effect.
