You could always try to expose him for he is, but I wouldn't honestly recommend that. I say just try to talk to your friends again, if he's trying to tell you rude comments then just ignore him, and tell him how foolish he is for being so rude and immature.
I guess everyone has this point of their life, soon enough he'll do something wrong, and he'll be out of those groups. From my perspective new students just have to try to fit in by pretending to share common interest to not get on the bad side of the classroom. Don't worry, in about a month or two, if you stand up for yourself, he'll be just a regular student, and class will resume the same.
