missing bookmarks icons + crazy tabs!!!

I used to have the bookmarks icon next to the 'next-to-homepage' icon (the little house). When I right-click and drag the bookmarks icon next to the little house, it goes there alright, but when I close and restart Firefox, it's gone.
Also, when I click on the little house, a new tab opens, and end up with a multitude of tabs. Firefox used to be great, but I'm not far from smashing up my laptop to smithereens!!! Arrgh! Help!!!

What extensions do you have? And had you done anything lately that might've caused this?

Hi FirefoxWiz,
the one extension I have is StumbleUpon, which I think is excellent.
Whether this has interfered with Firefox, I don't know, but it has dawned on me that it might be a good idea to uninstall and re-install Firefox...

You could either try uninstalling it and reinstalling it, or creating a new profile and see if that helps.

Someone suggested I start Firefox in safe mode
(start menu/Mozilla Firefox/Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode))
You can tick and untick a range of things in a dialog.
By trial an error, I managed to get my bookmarks icon back.
